Week Three

Robin remains at Ricks side. This week they are learning that recovery means one step ahead and one step back. This dance is bringing both joy and frustration. Rick successfully had his tracheostomy placed on Monday so breathing is a little easier. He sat up in a wheelchair for more than two hours today and spent 30 minutes off the ventilator, breathing on his own. The rough side is that he has been battling fevers that go quite high at night and so far the source of those fevers is baffling the doctors. Transfer to rehabilitation is on hold right now.
Robin thanks friends that continue to bring snacks for the hard working nursing staff. She also wonders if someone is "techy" smart to set up a live feed of the wedding if Rick is unable to attend. If you can, respond as a post please.

  1. I just sent an email to a friend who works for Channel 13. I am hoping, she will know of someone who could help. If not, Skype may work. Here is the link. www.skype.com

  2. I'll also check around the Symetra IT department to see if someone can help figure out how to get a video feed to Rick. Jay O.

  3. Hello, regarding the feed of the wedding, pardon the usual IT response :) - it depends on whether mobility is desired, expected video quality, location has wireless connection, costs expectations, etc. However, after checking with several other Symetra IT folks and friends (Alex L, Andrew C, Jim R, Melissa K, and Richard L), here are some options for consideration:
    - iPhone 4 FaceTime (http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/facetime.html) – provides live feed, better mobility, but requires the iPhone 4 units on both ends, WiFi and has service provider costs
    - Skype (http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/windows/ for computer; http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-mobile/?cm_mmc=m102 for cell phones), Ustream.com (http://www.ustream.tv/brakeout-broadcast) – provides live feed, mobility, but requires Internet connection, laptop with webcam or cell phone with camera and application, and may have account costs
    - Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/help/faq) – upload recording post-wedding; always need a backup option if some issues come up unexpectedly with the live feed

    Hope that helps!

  4. Good morning. I am the IT Manager in Group Division at Symetra and would like to take ownership for making this happen. I've known Rick since 1985 and it would be an honor for me to help him and the family in this way. Please contact at me your very earliest convenience so that I can gather details of the event and do my planning accordingly.

    Regards,

  5. Hello everyone. My name is Brett Simmons and I am an IT manager at Harborview. I was alerted to Rick's dilemma and I very much want to help make this happen. I believe we have some mobile video conferencing equipment at the hospital that we can potentially use. I am checking on those resources and will post an update when I know more. If anyone would like to reach me, here's my contact info. Thanks

  6. Blessings out to Doug and Brett! It's a Wedding....best to have backup plan. NOAA IT staffers provided this scenario....
You will need two computers with a micro phone /camera and two internet connections/wi-fi. You install this http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/home software on the two systems and you can view through the laptop's camera- you can also upgrade to a better camera for better picture.
